Cheating in Bonsai: Creating and Developing a Tanuki
In this video, Terry Erasmus showcases the process of creating and nurturing a Tanuki bonsai. Previously, Terry had attempted a Phoenix graft bonsai using a split, live juniper trunk merged with the trunk of a collected juniper, which unfortunately did not survive. In this demonstration, he details the steps he took to prepare the deceased trunk, integrate the live trunk, and foster the growth of the tree as a cohesive unit.

    A tree that has traces of wires or other traces of a diseased civilization is not bonsai. It's just a product for customers, not art.

    Very good information. Well presented and explained. I’ve learned what I need to change and address on our inherited tanuki. Screwing the live to the dead is intriguing, and appears to work better than various forms of strapping it. Thank you.

      Thanks so much for that feedback. Yes, using screws for an existing tanuki is a solution but try to use screws with the smallest head possible to reduce the size of the resulting scar which will be left.

      Hi there. Thanks for the comment. Best would be in spring when buds are swelling. It’s always going to be a risk when digging a pine but if you prepare it by chopping some roots the previous season it will help the collection.

    Our swamp cypresses and bald cypresses in the UK are like this on dry land: heavy foliage weighing the branches down. Some have deadwood carved by nature, as do some of the dawn redwoods that were planted in the park across the road from my house 30 years ago. They are still young but are developing beautiful trunks now! Bonsai is artistic license, whether you want to create a work of art from a specific species or take the natural route of clipping and growing. However, cypresses are definitely one that can benefit from a helping hand along the way to get things set while growing in pots! I love it and love the natural look! I'm looking to take on one that's needing a chop, but I just need some advice first before touching it! If you can help, that would be great!

      @TerryErasmusbonsai День тому

      Thanks so much for sharing those comments about the swamps and how they grow where you are. That’s helpful and interesting to me. I agree completely with your comments about bonsai and artistic license. I guess if you opt for a more “contentious” route you should prepare yourself for criticism. Starting a swamp is not too tricky as they are very strong growers. You can do a hard cut of the trunk in late spring and select one vigorous shoot as the new leader or continuation of the trunkline . That can be developed for a season. Clean up the trunk chop and taper it into the new leader. Develop your branches from the plenty of buds which form on the trunk. If you’d like to discuss this in greater detail please book a consultation here: www.bonsaitree.co.za/products/consultation

    Hi, Can you give me some information on hard pruning one these im thinking of taking on from a friend he has got it looking great but its still very tall 4ftish beautiful trunk on it all the growth is up top i do have a 10 year old one i grew from seed but know whare ready to be worked on as bonsai yet, my younger has loads buds on the branches already in june in full growth how do they bud back though is what im wondering if i done a major chop on this other other other one and when would be best time about November?

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai 2 дні тому

      Hello and thanks for the question. They cut probably be cut back hard anytime during active growth as they are generally so strong and will easily bud back. Digging out would be same time as you would repot, at bud break. I would cut back hard to roughly where you think the chop should be (depends on the design you have in mind). Then allow it to bud and select a single strong shoot to develop as the new trunk line. Once this is broom handle thickness or so then shape that original trunk chop to a nice angle tapering into the new trunk line. They do heal large scars but the larger the scar the longer it will take of course. You may end up having to fill the cavity which forms with cement in order to give it a good base for callous formation. I don’t want to refer to a date as your climate and seasons are different to mine.

    Perhaps this is a dumb question, but can wiring the tree into the pot cause wire scars on the nebari?

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai 2 дні тому

      Not a dumb question at all. Yes it can, assuming your wire crosses over a root and you leave the wire on for a long time. There are various methods for using wire to secure trees. One includes hammering sticks into the root ball from the sides and then securing the wire over that. If you don’t have a developed root ball then that’s not an option. Then securing wire over deeper roots is another solution.

      Great! Best time for this is spring of course. Also, try to use species which will manage in the kind of light you will grow the planting in. For me to keep moss alive in Summer and provide sufficient sun for a pine is not possible. I would change that.

    The thinning out process would be valuable to see as well. I have several shimpaku that have strong branches directly above weaker branches coming from same main branch. Basically stacked on one another.

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai 4 дні тому

      You need to keep the strong. Or you could wire and twist the growth to lay the branches flattish, so the strong no longer shades the weak.

      That’s interesting, not sure why anyone would call him a fool for using the technique. It’s been employed in Takamatsu (growing center for pines in Japan) for a very long time, this is where I learn about it. Translated it means “cage wiring”. Works brilliantly.

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai 8 днів тому

      That’s not something I can assist you with as I’ve never done it myself. Both approaches could work but I think approach graft in such a situation is more likely to succeed. Grafting onto an old and barked trunk is not easy.

    The toughest part of removing a tree in ground is always that last large tap root or bundle of roots in the center underneath. I've never grown things over tiles but I've removed trees and I'm sure this method helps a lot with removal.

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai 8 днів тому

      It certainly does, that’s an important point which you made. I’ve always used a tile and always from cuttings and always preparing the young tree before sticking it into the ground. Growing from cuttings is also much better than from seed.

    Very cool Terry, I always learn a lot with your videos... You were crucial for my first trident maple development, and I'm loving to grow it on the ground, I only have space for one at the moment, but it definatelly worth the spot... You also helped me save that tree from a serious fungal issue. My maple is almost leafless here, didn't show much colors this year. I'm planning to lift the tree from the ground this year to work on it's base, but I'm insecure to cut the sacrifice branch now, could I wait a little more, like until mid winter?

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai 9 днів тому

      Thank you so much, I am glad you have learnt something from some of my content. Field growing is truly awesome, well done. Actually it depends. If you want back budding then better to cut the sacrifice in late spring. If you don't need back budding then yes you can cut any time now till mid or late winter probably. Just bear in mind that if you do root work that the tree will take roughly 2 years to get back to the current energy level.

    Wow - this tanuki has really progressed since its first creation! That protruding live vein is melding quite nicely and convincingly to the stump now. Amazing how foliage pad creation can bring the whole composition to life! I love the term 'Phoenix Graft' - really captures the idea of bringing new life to worthy old specimens and letting them live on in a different capacity. Much appreciate your wiring tutorial. Will be super helpful when I approach the Canadian autumn season - haven't had much opportunity to practice with my young material yet.

      @TerryErasmusbonsai 10 днів тому

      Thank you Sue. Yes, I am so happy with the progress myself, it has after all only been 3 years since I combined the elements. I’m not actually sure where the term Phoenix graft comes from but I agree it is very apt. Good luck with the wiring when you get there. Becoming adept with wiring opens up many creative opportunities with your trees.
